These fish are named mesopelagic fish as they live in the ‘mesopelagic zone’ (200-1,000 m below sea level), below the epipelagic zone (uppermost layer of Ocean)
There are about 172 million tonnes and over 160 species of mesopelagic fish in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), about 12 nautical miles from the coast.
About 75% of mesopelagic fishes are myctophids also known as ‘lanternfish’ due to the presence of bioluminescence. She said these fish lead to diarrhea when humans consume them.
The high protein can be commercially exploited by paint industries or processed into poultry, animal feed or as crop fertilizers. Bioluminescence can be used in the cosmetics industry. Oman, African countries and parts of Kerala are already harvesting mesopelagic fish for fish meal industries.
These weird-looking fish, though inedible, have the potential to turn the fortunes of Karnataka’s crisis-ridden marine fisheries sector around, according to scientists in ICAR-CMFRI (Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute), Mangalore Regional Centre (MRC).
