  1. BMRCL to buy land near Bhadra Tiger Reserve : Compensatory Afforestation scheme.

  • Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) is planning to buy a 67-acre private plot near Bhadra Tiger Reserve in lieu of forest land in Kadugodi, which will be used to construct a depot under phase-II of Namma Metro.
  • BMRCL will be acquiring 45 acres of land in Kadugodi from the Forest Department. As per the policy, it will have to purchase and hand over a plot of land of the same size for the Forest Department to carry out afforestation work.

  1. Kodagu district administration bans ‘disaster tourism’

  • The Kodagu district administration has ordered a crackdown on ‘disaster tourism’ as a large number of people are visiting the flood and landslip-hit areas following the recent natural calamity.
  • Disaster tourism has been defined as the practice of visiting locations at which an environmental disaster, either natural or man-made, have occurred. Although a variety of disasters exist, the most common disaster tourist sites the surrounding areas of volcanic eruptions.

  1. Hong Kong decided to phase out the import of solid waste.



  • China will ban the import of 32 types of solid waste, as part of its latest move to reduce environmental pollution.
  • The ban on 16 types of solid waste, including scrap cars and boats, will take effect on Dec 31. Another 16 types of waste material, including stainless steel and wood, will be banned starting at the end of next year.
  • Since the 1980s, China has imported solid waste－including paper, plastic and scrap metal as raw materials to make up for the domestic shortage of resources, and has for years been the world's largest importer of recyclable materials, which posed a danger to the environment and public health.
  • In addition to the restrictions on importing solid waste, China intends to boost its domestic recycling business. By 2020, the amount of solid waste recycled in China will increase to 350 million metric tons, from 246 million tons in 2015.
